There are so many opportunities online to make (or break) a fledgling career. Every freelance artist, designer, or writer can count on the Web for a worldwide distribution of their portfolios. But will the portfolio invite clients or put them off? Is it interesting and provocative enough? Is it honest and shows the person’s commitment? Will it be fully appreciated by the viewer?
Or is it carelessly drawn and mediocre, without the potential to help any career in connecting to an ocean of opportunities available throughout the world? The effort a person puts on his or her work is reflectd on how the portfolio appears. Make a good initial visial impression. A portfolio should be beautifully presented, neat, tidy, and it should be easy enough to navigate through. But that is just skimming the top. There is so much more to it, and these are a few of the do’s and don’t a newby will definitely find indispensable.
1. Express your goals and really mean it:
Only when the objectives are clear will the portfolio start with its best foot forward. With career goals clearly established, the content, look, and flow of the portfolio will come easily. It is not enough that a person knows the scope of one’s talent. But it has to be determined early on what your abilities can offer and the extent of the potential that can still be tapped.
2. Be professional in all aspects, but show off your personal best, too:
All those credentials and references are quite essential and ought to be presented tastefully. But expanding that to include the sources of inspiration, your influences and interests make the experience of viewing and reviewing the portfolio even more interesting. Who a person is, apart from what a person is capable in terms of the position being applied for, is as important to most future employers.
3. Be concise and emphasize:
Rather than spill it all out and end up with clutter, make sure the portfolio is as straighforward and concise as possible. Save the complex sentences for whatever future project will require such. Use simple and effective sentences and exercise economy of words. Emphasize your strengths and highlight unique aspects to get their attention. And hold back before it becomes too tedious.
4. Be proud of your work and showcase it appropriately:
The best way to impress a potential employer is to show excellent work. Since these people will initially rely on what they see and how these are presented, show how competent and creative you are. The only output worth showcasing are the best ones and so, there is no need to show off the ones that do not quite achieve greatness. It is best to present a handful of good work, rather than give a list of 30 that do not quite make the mold.
5. Simplify:
Use a simple, easily navigable lay-out. Structure the site such that it reflects an organized mind and focused talent. Make sure the usability of the website that contains your professional signature is at the highest level because this element is as essential as the content.
