Basically there was a time when computer memory was very limited, and programmers had to create very smooth albeit complex programming so that no memory was wasted. Then along came the internet and it was so slow to download that if your website was covered in images, then only the pentagon or MI5 could have seen it.
In these simple times, when Tony Blair was stopping wars instead of starting them, and Bill Clinton was a loyal husband…… the simpler a website was, then the more chance it could be seen by the masses. Don’t forget we have only just gotten over the era where some peoples computers could not read certain web programming.
In the past the simplest websites were the most widely viewed, and this trend seems to have resounding success. Look at the successful grandfather companies on the internet. Amazon’s format is as simple as sausages and yet it is a world leader. Google is nothing short of a simple list with 3-4 adverts at the top or side. The trend of simple websites works and will be here for a long time.
Guiding The Eye
It is a basic marketing move and translates nicely into the internet. It necessary to guide the eye of the visitor to a few distinct key components, and then allowed to breathe the rest of the layout.
An old principle of web design is recommended to keep at least 60% of white space on a page so as to not hinder readability. It is a little harder to read from a screen than it is from paper. As Giles on Buffy the Vampire says, it’s because you can lean back to read a book, but have to lean forward to read a screen. Whether this is true I don’t know but it will do. Anyway, it is estimated that same surface needed on paper text is closer to 40% white space.

Along these same lines of simplification, it should be noted that navigation has barely changed, with a horizontal menu at the top, a vertical menu on the left, and sometimes a menu on the right. Field names are simple, preferably short, but leaving no room for ambiguity.
Colors And Shapes Trends Have Barely Changed
Colors and shapes obviously play a crucial role in building attractive looking websites however, it seems that the light colored box with dark writing, or grey box with black writing seems to have prevailed over most websites. The trend for big circles covered with text, or stars with images in has never really taken off on a large scale.
Bright and contrasting colors attract the eyes, so dividing the page with large flat areas of bold colors seems to work. It is an old trend, but so long as the colors are not too loud, then it seems to work. Apple, she still plays with shades of gray, white and black on its website, and blocks of hot pink are still seen in great profanity on female targeted websites.
Visual Consistency
Visual consistency another basic rule of marketing has translated well into the internet and has not died off for a more modern techniques. The important thing is to maintain visual consistency. Too many saturated colors and the site becomes unreadable, the eye does not know where to hang. The effect only works when used sparingly.
The Lost Flashy Trend – - – Yay— Has Found A New Home
One crummy little trend we have gotten away from is Flash intros. They are annoying and thankfully have fallen greatly in the last few years. People were sold the idea that their website is their online shop front, and so should be attractive, sleek and professional. This is in-fact true, but Flash intros were not the way to do this. It is like people entering your shop and having to see a pointless ten second video before you show them your stock. It’s annoying and pointless, and even though I concede there may be websites where a flash intro may educate the customer about a product or service, I have not yet seen it done good enough to warrant its existence. Flash has however taken a new home in tutorials and demonstrations of products. This is often where you get to click on it to see the tutorial or demonstration and are not forced to sit through it at the beginning, like the adverts for phones at the cinema. Aarrrrgh!!!!
